About Stepconfigurator

Born in an actual shop.
Not in a software office.

Stepconfigurator is not a venture-backed startup product. It was built in the daily practice of a Dutch scooter shop because no existing solution did the job.

A real-world problem

In 2024, Scootercenter J.W. Kers in Apeldoorn faced a difficult choice. The webshop sold scooters in dozens of variations: different colors, engines, accessories and service plans. Customers ordering online had to puzzle through variations, separate product pages and an awkward WooCommerce flow. Orders rarely came through correctly the first time.

Existing product configurators in the WordPress world were available, but none felt right. Some were technically strong but incomprehensible in the admin. Others were visually polished but missed essentials like iDEAL in3 support or proper Dutch translation.

Choosing to build it ourselves

What started as an internal tool for one shop grew into a full plugin. Not because we wanted to start a software company, but because we noticed other shop owners running into the same problems. A bicycle shop with frame sizes and colors. A furniture maker with fabric and wood choices. A greenhouse builder selling custom orders.

The same need: guide customers through choices in clear steps, with live price calculation, and a clean WooCommerce checkout at the end.

How we work

Stepconfigurator is maintained by a small team in Apeldoorn. We do not use ticketing systems with three-day wait times. You email, we respond within one business day. Usually faster. Updates ship periodically with new features that come from real customer questions, not from a marketing plan.

The plugin is actively tested in the maker's own webshop. That means we often run into issues ourselves before a customer reports them. It keeps us sharp.

What matters to us

  • Honesty in marketing. We don't claim our plugin solves every problem. The features page lists what it actually does, no more.
  • Fair pricing. A transparent yearly price with everything included. No "pro" version that suddenly costs twice as much. No hidden add-ons.
  • Good guidance without dependency. A welcome page, clear manual and an FAQ that actually answers questions. You can get started independently.
  • Dutch first. The plugin speaks Dutch terminology, knows iDEAL in3 and SprayPay, and is built for the way Dutch webshops work. English is fully supported, but Dutch came first.

The maker

Jan Kers is the founder of Scootercenter J.W. Kers and the inventor and builder of Stepconfigurator. No professional software development background, but plenty of entrepreneur experience running into daily problems and building solutions that work.

Questions, ideas or feedback go directly to the maker. No middleman, no help desk. Direct contact with someone who wrote every line of code himself.
